That One Time I Wound Up in Hawaii Instead of Mexico

Not a bad thing, either way.

You see, we had a road trip through the Baja Peninsula of Mexico all planned out.  It was going to be relaxing, at our own pace, a good chance to brush up my seriously rusty Spanish.  Then my sister (unable to join us) read the travel warnings.

To mitigate the risk of living with “I told you so” for the rest of our lives, we last minute changed the trip to Hawaii.  Changing flights was a bit stressful, but it all worked out!

Window seat for the win.

However, anything that went a bit haywire during that trip was definitely my sister’s fault.

We hit three islands; Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii (the big island).  You’ll hear it all of the time and I won’t contradict it, every island is different.  Each has a different feel and a wide range of things to offer, while still retaining that Hawaiian undercurrent of relaxation, lush vegetation, lava, and daily rainbows.  I miss those daily rainbows.

You’d better believe I had a flower in my hair every day.

The trip started out by being flexible which became the common theme.  Which was a good thing.  Who wants to be stuck in a set routine when you’re island hopping?  Still being in the US takes away language and currency barriers, so it’s easy to coast through your travels.

While not as inexpensive as travel through Mexico, you can still stick to a budget in Hawaii.  We achieved this by camping as much as possible, making our own meals, and doing most things on our own rather than through a tour.

It all comes down to being flexible and ready to jump on new experiences when they come up.  It was easy to feel derailed when plans changed last minute, but I have no complaints!

Welcome!

There’s a fire outside of the station window, rolling up the mountainside.  Not the kind of fire we EMS have to respond to.  The kind that moves ever so slowly, leaf by bush by dried grass until the summer dust is overtaken by yellows and reds.  Watching autumn come in is my favorite for several reasons.

One, it’s beautiful.  Clearly.  Fall storms come in and give texture to the sky that has been flat and blue for most of the summer.  The temperatures drop and I can wear sweaters and hats and I like those very much.  The horses get silly with the wind in their ears and snow dusts and melts all in the same day.  It’s the breath before winter.

And it means I get to go travel.

Winter means I’m a ski patroller, summer means I’m building mountain bike trails, and all times in between I work on an ambulance.  But in the fall (and the occasional spring) I’m a traveler.

This fall it’s off on a road trip through the Baja Peninsula of Mexico.  I get the feeling the drive down south will grant me fall in reverse, passing back into summer.  When I return it’ll be winter.  At least it ought to be.

I’m just getting this blog off of the ground, so thanks for stopping by!  I aim to make regular updates along the way south.  Stick around to hear about beaches and snorkeling and hiking and food!
